Last week I was reading a copy of Grazia magazine when I spotted one of the headlines that grabbed me. You know the ones that are always OTT, draw you in then when you read the article you realise it was no where near as good as the headline suggested? Yeah one of those; “The size normal girl causing a Hollywood storm’. You may have seen the picture of Lena Dunham, star of HBO’s hit series Girls, read about the fall out and then gotten over it. Well as ever, I’m late to the party on this one, but I’ve had the opportunity to read up on the fall out, then see what she had to say about it and came up with my own observations about ‘that outfit‘.
If you’re not familiar with the story let me give you the 411. Lena Dunham turned up to an event wearing the outfit you can see below. Her ensemble; micro shorts, a teal over-sized shirt and brown polka dot loafers.
When the pictures hit the net, she got heavily criticised with a lot of the criticism coming from fashion bloggers, allegedly. Glamour ran a poll asking if the outfit was a ‘Do’ or ‘Don’t and a resounding 82% of readers voted it a ‘Don’t.
But it doesn’t end there…. Lena Dunham defended her outfit by saying if she had skinny thighs people wouldn’t have reacted to the outfit in the way they did.
But I think she’s missing the point and trying to turn it into a body image issue, which it’s not about. It drew a lot of attention because it looked like she had nothing on her bottom half. But the outfit does nothing for her, and in my opinion, it’s got nothing to do with her micro shorts. Her top is just shapeless, you can’t even see what sort of body she has because it’s just hiding it all.
It’s got nothing to do with the size of her thighs that makes this terrible it’s the fact it doesn’t do anything for her shape. If a skinny girl had wore it, it would still have looked terrible.
I showed it to my girlfriend who had no idea about the background to the story or what occasion the outfit was for and her initial response was that it looked like something you might go to bed in.
This is a perfect example of how not to dress for your body shape or the occasion.
If she want’s tips on what to wear when you have a voluptuous frame she should take notes from Christina Hendricks.
Did you see the outfit when it originally caused a stir? I’d love to hear your thoughts?
