I was browsing the web trying to find inspiration for this weeks post when I came across something on FBFF about outfit formula’s. It was inspired by V at gritandglamour who had talked about her personal uniform or outfit formula in a post she had written. I wanted to take it a little bit further and add my own 2 cents to the concept. Quite often you’ll read in magazines about certain celebrities having a ‘signature look’ then they’ll tell you how to achieve it. But have you ever considering just creating your own signature look? This way you can pick and choose elements and take inspiration from all over and end up with something that’s unique to you.
You may already have your own signature look with out already realising. I’ve never consciously tried to create a ‘look’ myself but when I think about the outfits I put together and the clothes I naturally gravitate towards when shopping, they all come together to create my own signature look.
How Do I Start Building A Signature Look?
As I already mentioned you may have started building one. Whether you have or not I would recommend starting by building a look book. This will be your inspiration, fill it full of pictures of outfits you like and want to take inspiration from.
If you’ve not decided on your signature look yet or fancy changing it then nows the time to decide. You can use your look book to help you or take a walk around town. I love getting fashion inspiration from the people that I see when I’m walking about town. Have a look through your wardrobe and see what you have already? What have you naturally gravitated towards in the past? I’d imagine there will be some sort of theme already starting to build up; maybe it’s a vintage look or maybe classic tailored pieces? If there is not a theme then pick one.
Now it’s abut cultivating your look. So continue with the look book as this will help keep you going also try and keep up to date with the latest trends to keep your look fresh and exciting.
You may have decided that you want your signature look to be all about the trends, while it’s possible… I wouldn’t really recommend it. Instead try and incorporate the trends into your signature look, otherwise you’re going to be spending money on an entire new wardrobe each season. You don’t have to buy into trends each season if you don’t want to, for example the pin up girl look is a really unique look that always look’s cool.
When it comes to shopping think about what you’re purchasing. It sounds ridiculous but it’s easy to impulse buy just because you think something is cool. You may not even need it and it may deviate from the look you’re trying to build.
A word about deviation; you are allowed to deviate this concept is not about only wearing a certain look 100% of the time. For example my signature look is classic staples that are well fitted, leaning towards the formal side. But I’ll still wear something that’s a little bit baggy every now and then.
So there you have it, if you have any question’s let me know by commenting below.
Would love to hear if you have a signature look.
