It’s been a while since I’ve graced my blog with my presence, but you know how it is sometimes life just catches up with you. Fingers crossed I’m back in the swing of things and thought I’d celebrate that with another edition of the Essentials series. I’ve covered a number of men’s staple pieces since I started, but I thought as last time it was all about blazers, the next natural step would be waist coats. So sit down and buckle in and prepare to find out why you need a waist coat in your wardrobe.
Despite what you may think waist coats are fantastically versatile pieces and can be worn in a number of ways to add a little bit of sophistication to your look. As with most tailored pieces it’s all about the fit of your waist coat so if you are thinking of getting one you need to get this bit right. The fit should be snug against your body, not too big and also not too tight. You’ll also need to keep a check on what you’re wearing underneath as anything too baggy will balloon underneath causing a bit of a scruffy look. If you’ve already got a waist coat but the fit is a little bit too big don’t forget if you take it a tailor or seamstress they’ll be able to take it in for you.
A waist coat can make a powerful statement as part of a three piece suit so next time you’re in the market for one try and add a waist coat to the suit to give you that alternative option. For a more casual look try throwing on an unbuttoned waist coat over some smart jeans and a tee. Finally you can try combining a plaid or plain coloured shirt with a waist coat and dark denim for a smart casual feel.
Waist coats come in all different fabrics and colours ranging from traditional black, greys and navy blue to tweeds and more casual cotton coloured varieties. You maybe better off sticking to the more traditional colours to start with, but if you’re feeling a little bit more adventurous then go ahead and indulge in something a bit more striking. Just remember when buttoning your waist coat just like the blazer, always leave the bottom button open.
Are you a fan of waist coats? Either way I’d love to hear your opinion, feel free to comment below.
