Style Icons: Tom Ford

December 22, 2010 by Arash Mazinani 3 Comments

Those of you that check out my blog regularly will know that I recently came down with manflu so spent the majority of the last week resting. Unfortunately during that time I didn’t get to give you guys the post you were expecting. I’m glad to say I’m now fully recovered and able to deliver what I promised. As you guys have probably noticed I have not done a style icons post for a while so I thought I’d hit you with someone new just before christmas. I had a few people in mind but ended up settling on this particular person for two reasons. One, he epitomises style and two, oozes sex appeal, so with out further a do I present; Style Icons: Tom Ford.

If you don’t already know who Tom Ford is then allow me to introduce him to you. Tom Ford is an American fashion designer most famous for reviving the Gucci brand and putting the glamour back into fashion. He worked as creative director for Gucci from 1994 to 2004 and turned it from an almost bankrupt fashion house to a brand valued at $10 billion before moving onto start his own label.

I’ve spoken to friends who remember Gucci clothing from when Tom Ford was designing them and the one thing they all reference is how they had sex appeal. There is something about this man, whenever his name comes up in conversation women swoon over him. Now let’s break it down a little, Tom Ford is always dressed to impress that’s the key thing to take from his gentleman. Although his favoured style is that of formalwear you can still pick up tips from the way he carries himself and how he puts his pieces together.

If you’re a fan of formal wear, like myself then you’ll love Mr Ford’s style. His suits are always perfectly cut he pays attention to the little extra details such pocket squares and bow ties. To get around the potential monotony of wearing similar pieces he chooses different textures and fabrics as well as colours. He also relaxes more formal looks by leaving an extra button open on a dress shirt which is almost a signature look for him now or rolling his sleeves up.

The Tom Ford look is easy to mimic if you are prepared to go the extra mile with your details. The number one detail is the fit, a strong shoulder line and nipped in waist are crucial to give you that elegant yet masculine V shape. Also look at adding a couple of good quality accessories such as a simple piece of jewellery, bow tie or a relaxed open scarf.

Style Icons: Jude Law

October 16, 2010 by Arash Mazinani 8 Comments

When I started writing the style icon articles I knew straight away that I’d be doing one for Jude Law at some point. I’d say when I was personally developing my own style he was definitely one of my ‘model’s. I’d have a few pictures in my lookbook of him. As I’ve said in the past if you’re keen in developing you’re own style, lookbook’s are a great resource to use for inspiration and also to track your own progress. As for people in the public eye his style for me exudes a classic Brit vibe.

Jude Law was brought up by his school teacher parents in London before getting into acting around the age of 12. As far his style goes he is usually really well groomed which always makes one look more polished. When you see him stepping out on the red carpet or on an evening he can usually be found in well tailored suits, ties and waist coats. He is very classic in the way he dresses, not being fond of trends, however keeps his style up beat and modern by layering classic tailored pieces with casual staples like deep v neck tees.

His style is a good starting point to emulate if you are taking the first steps to improving your own style. You can look stylish and keep it simple, which is what I think Jude Law has down to a tee. His more casual attire is made up knits, tees and jeans in neutral colours, accessorised by items like chunky knitted hats and scarves for cooler weather.

I think one of the key things you can learn from Jude Law is that style is about keeping it simple. Quite often we see celebrities in luxury items or pieces that only a celebrity can get away with. Jude Law’s style can easily be achieved by anybody with a reasonable budget as it relies on classic staples that every guy ought to own.

Style Icons: Mark Ronson

August 17, 2010 by Arash Mazinani Leave a Comment

I’m back with another style icon feature this time we’re having a look at DJ/Producer Mark Ronson. I was racking my brain trying to think of a not so obvious style icon and unlike our last icon, Kanye West, Ronson is not as keen to hoard the limelight. However, he does share Mr West’s Hip hop background, starting out as a Hip Hop producer on the New York party scene. Ronson really catapulted to super producer status after producing the majority of Amy Winehouse’s Back to Black album, which helped him receive a grammy in 2008 for ‘Best Producer’.

To help celebrate his grammy success Mark Ronson was picture in a gold satin suit by Dolce & Gabbana, quite fitting considering is shining success.

I’m a big fan of the way Mark Ronson style’s himself and is most definitely an icon for guys wanting to move from a boyish to a more refined gentleman’s style. You can tell, just like his music he is hugely influenced by the 1960’s style with sharp tailoring and a sleek overall look. Although he admits he started out (similar to myself I may add) in jeans and hoodies while DJing, when he moved in to his twenties he realised clothes looked better when they fit well.

He was voted best dressed man by GQ in 2009 and collaborated with Gucci’s Frida Giannini this year on a limited edition collection of trainers.

So what’s Mark Ronson’s Key?

I think Mark Ronson is a good example of how well tailored clothes can really make you stand out. Ronson favours pencil slim, fitted suits that compliment his slim frame. When he wants to make a statement he’ll go for a bold colour or a contrasting shirt with a signature skinny tie and tie clip. For a more relaxed look he’ll team fitted trousers with casual knits. He’s championing high street fashion too, you can see him in his latest music video sporting a Topman double breasted skinny fit suit in a bold yellow. He is a good example that you don’t have to spend a fortune to get a polished look and that well fitting clothes are absolutely vital to good style.

Here are a couple of pictures I’ve found showing off his style.

Style Icons: Kanye West

July 13, 2010 by Arash Mazinani 1 Comment

We’ve started the same feature in the ladies section of the site and we’re bringing it over to the guys as well; Style Icons. The first icon for the guys is not an obvious first choice to kick off the campaign with, he has only  been considered stylish in recent years as he’s slowly developed. He’s also been seen popping up on the front rows of some major designer fashion shows. He’s pals with Marc Jacobs and one of Hip Hop’s super producer’s; Kanye West.

So why does Kanye qualify as a style icon?

I’m a massive Hip Hop fan as I’m sure you’ll know if you’ve read my fashion timeline so I can kind of relate to Mr West’s transformation. He burst on the scene with his college drop out album in 2004 sporting Ralph Lauren polo shirts, baggy jeans and a Louis Vuitton rucksack. The college boy persona went hand in hand with the message of his album.

However, as each album was released and Kanye matured so did his style, Mr West has the ability to pull off a whole array of looks and no longer has one particular signature ‘look’. If you flick through the archives of pictures you’ll see him carrying preppy looks, casual, smart, formal all effortlessly.

Kanye is no stranger to designer labels and in 2009 the ‘Louis Vuitton don’ collaborated with Louis Vuitton to release his own line of trainers.

So what’s Kanye’s key?

He definitely doesn’t lack in the confidence department, he has a tremendous self belief that has helped him become one of the music industry’s most sought after producers. This confidence allows him to wear a whole host of different ‘get ups’ and pull it off as he always looks comfortable wearing it. He may try things that are more daring than the usual fashionista, combining bold colours and strong accessories.

Noticing the importance of accessorising from chains, to bow ties to bags and sunglasses, accessories are often over looked but can help in dramatically lifting your fashion look. Also notice the combining of formal and casual pieces like bow ties and denim jackets that he wears to create a beautiful juxtaposition.

Here are a collection of photo’s I’ve found that display Kanye’s ability to pull off different looks. Remember if you’d like someone to be featured in our style icon’s then you can get in touch with us here.
