I live in an apartment in the city centre of Leeds, while I love the convenience, city centre apartments are known for their lack of storage space. When I was choosing this place I made sure it had a big wardrobe, big enough to fit both my clothes and my girlfriends clothes in, no mean feat. If you’re like me from time to time your wardrobe will get messy, you may get home from work and feel the urge to throw your clothes on the bed or just stuff them in the wardrobe resulting in something that looks like an explosion in a vintage store. I tend to make sure I go through my wardrobe once a month and if it’s something you’ve never done before I definitely encourage you to take it up.
Maybe I’m OCD but when things are tidy I just find it easier to think, but there are a whole bunch of other benefits which include:
- Finding clothes you’d forgotten about or rarely wear.
- Making it easier to find your clothes, which means it takes you less time to get dressed in the morning.
- Your clothes will last longer, if they’re neatly placed in the wardrobe instead of just flung in or stuffed in a draw you’ll get more wear from them.
- It’ll be easier to put new pieces together creating new looks, if you can see all your items and you know what’s actually in your wardrobe instead of it being a scary stock pile of clothes you’ll find it much easier to put pieces together.
- You’ll save space which can then be filled by even more clothes! Giving you the perfect excuse to splash out on that new suit you’ve been wanting.
So I have my Sunday afternoon covered sorting out my wardrobe, if yours is crying for a clear out, go on… your soul will thank you for it.

Okay, so I definitely could be more tidy with my closet. It tends to get messy during the school year when I am going absolutely bananas with the loads of work and lack of time. BUT. I just did a major clean-out, got rid of things and transitioned the rest of my warm weather clothes out of my wardrobe and finished ushering in the winter garments. And I must say–so much easier to navigate the mayhem-less closet! And you are totally right. Whenever there is more space in there, I feel the need to fill it by shopping. I think this is good, others close to me might beg to differ… :]

i should go through my clost much more often! i just moved out from my apartment, and that’s always the perfect time to eliminate clothes i don’t wear anymore. however, i still have too many clothes which i rarely wear, but i can’t give them away!!

I probably have way too many clothes, but I don’t feel like I have nearly enough! I recently invested in some more storage for mine and it has helped greatly with organization, but I do agree, I think in the future I’m going to have to come up with a system for discarding things every so often.

Hi Arash,
Some great advice here, I reckon I am probably a tad OCD too, but, being in the same profession I feel we should lead by example!!
I can’t decide if I have too many clothes or not enough storage space, either way, I only have current season clothing in my wardrobe, and put out of season stuff in storage boxes (clean, pressed and wrapped in acid free tissue of course!!!)
I LOVE organization…doing it and looking at it…haha.
I also LOVE closets. I think they tell so much about you and your style. Designing my closet is definitely going to be one of my most time-consuming room when I buy my own home.
And I also love cleaning out my wardrobe/closet because it is then when I realize how much extra ‘stuff’ I have that’s really only superficial material things. I mean, I love shopping and I love clothes but it’s great to be able to clear out my ‘stuff’ and give them to charities and people who really need them more than I. Cleaning out your closet is more rewarding that you would think…
