I’m back again with another ladies post. As I mentioned in the men’s section I’ve been absent for a little bit mainly down to life taking over. But I’ve been seriously giving the blog some food for thought, I’m not giving up on you all, don’t worry. However, what I am going to try out is posting once a week as opposed to twice a week. It just makes it a lot easier for me to plan posts and ultimately deliver you guys something that’s higher quality. At the moment I sometimes feel that I’m forcing the mid week post and doing it for the sake of it, which is no good. So in the future you’ll find that I’ll be alternating between a post for the guys and a post for the ladies, I may end up changing the design of the blog as well, but that’s staying the same for now.
But back on topic, I wanted to talk about this notion of being scared of wearing the same thing. I maybe stereotyping when I say this, but I tend to hear it from women more so than men. Women that I know personally, always seem to have this obsession with getting something new when they go out. I know from past conversations that many wouldn’t dream of wearing the same thing twice.
I don’t really know where this concept stems from, whether it’s just a certain set of women that I’ve happened to have talked to, that think like this. Maybe it comes from the media, TV shows and movies often depict girls going shopping before a night out. Even outfit bloggers fall victim to this, I’ve seen very few that wear the same thing often. They must have huge wardrobe spaces and massive credit card bills, considering the amount they post and how nothing is ever shown twice. I’m pretty sure there are some that do and I know there was a 30 for 30 challenge which forced a number of outfit bloggers to rely on only 30 items for 30 days. But what was interesting was that a lot of them found it really challenging.

I guess the automatic response to “I have nothing to wear” is to buy new clothes rather than sit down and really think about how you can utilise what you already have and make it work even harder. Buying clothes gives you an endorphin rush and instant gratification, considering how you can re-work what you already have takes brain power and a bit of time. It’s no wonder people opt for the former and never consider the later.

I guess this post is really a challenge to anyone that has that mindset. I’d like you to first off, dismiss this idea that wearing the same clothes more than once is some how a bad thing. Learning how to work a capsule wardrobe and rotate, mix and match and rework different pieces ultimately develops your style brain and makes you stylish. Blindly throwing money at the fact you have nothing to wear doesn’t make you stylish, it just curbs the problem… until you think you have nothing to wear again and the cycle continues…
Are you someone that buys new clothes when you have nothing to wear? Would you wear the same outfit twice? I’d love to hear your thoughts.

This is a great post, and something that’s close to my heart. I don’t know where the need to buy something new for a night out comes from, I guess it’s a desire to feel special. I don’t have a lot of clothes and really enjoy mixing and matching what I do have to create different outfits. Like you I’ve noticed that a lot of other fashion bloggers seem to have an endless selection of clothes that don’t seem to get worn more than once. You’re right, it takes time and creativity to make a small collection of clothes work but I believe it’s the best way to develop your style and really discover what works for you. Niki x
Yeah definitely, I love it when in my mind I conjure up a new outfit from pieces I already have. Sometimes you just need little bit of inspiration, that’s where the internet comes along. Alternatively a helping hand never goes a miss as well..
For me it is a balance—-
I don’t like to repeat night out outfits with friends. I do re-wear elements of looks, but I always want them to be styled in a new way. It is a delicate balance of what to feel fresh in a look and not wasteful…
Yeah I think obviously the trick is reworking what you have to create multiple outfits, season on season. I did stumble across a blog the other day that linked to a challenge where you had to pick 6 items and wear only those for a month. Now that is pretty difficult, so going to keep my eye out on how that progresses.
Totally agree with Alexis. If it’s an important occassion like a wedding, a date, an important meeting…… because it’s tuesday i’ll purposely look for an outfit but generally when I shop it’s if I get bored of my look. I buy outfits if something stands out to me, I like it and feel good in it and if I do find something that makes me feel sexy, stylish and now am getting older… feel comfortable in I normally go through a fad of wearing it as often as I can but accessories differently. The only problem is celebrities have clothes flung at them to advertise brands and because they get papped so often tend to wear the same clothes as little as possible as magazines tend to have the opinion that it’s a taboo to wear more than once alongside being found to be wearing the same outfit as someone else at the same event but now whereas before Jo Bloggs used to get away with circulating favourite outfits amongst different groups of friends because of social media and being tagged in to all social events on photos depending on how much Jo Bloggs portrays themselves as a fashionista it’s a lot easier to be caught up in the same taboo. Vx
Yeah I can see where the commotion that a celebrity wearing the same outfit twice may bring. But ultimately they’re real people too, I kind of salute her for having the balls to do it, regardless of what the media may have wrote about her. Also Ditto about the so called ‘fashionista’.
I wear a lot of my favorite pieces over and over again. Like my new pink jeans from H&M that I have already featured twice on my blog. And a lot of my other pieces….even though I have a LOT of clothing I tend to usually wear my favorites over and over again. Honestly I think style bloggers shouldn’t be scared to post a piece more then once it a. makes them human b. actually shows that they know how to style. Also I find that many of the “big” style bloggers get a LOT of free clothing so well they never have to wear the same piece. But I do fall victim to the “I have to buy a new outfit for….” Esp if it’s a big event like New Years Eve, my bday…I also don’t have a lot of “club” clothing since I don’t find myself going out to clubs so often so when that does come around I feel like I have to get something new…Also I think I come up with excuses just to go shopping so i don’t feel bad about shopping lol. If that makes sense?

Yeah a lot of the really high profile ones get free stuff posted to them. So it works both ways, they always have something new to wear and the brands get all their pieces exposed to their readers. I’ve seen your pink H&M jeans in your latest post :-).

You will often find me wearing the same outfit over and over again. Recently it’s been that brown fur jacket thats on my blog right now and a black vinyl zara pencil skirt. Sometimes this is just laziness – the skirt and jacket go on the back of the chair at night and go right back on the next morning! Sometimes I just fall in love with one outfit and I can’t get enough of it. I do like updating my wardrobe though, especially seasonally. I do get bored of things, but I don’t have the money to wear new things every day. On the other hand, I try very hard to wear new outfits on my blog, though certain pieces do reoccur.
p.s. Dont worry about not posting frequently. I much prefer one great post a week to lots of fast and dirty ones. And if one a week means the blog will go on then I’m all for that too! Love your posts, really i do.
Awww thank you, I really appreciate it 🙂

I think it’s great that you have a new posting plan for your blog. Quality is always better than quantity. 🙂 Do what you gotta do!
I definitely have some go-to outfits, especially for first dates. Being single, I’ve gone on a lot of first dates in the past six months and I know what looks good. Why give myself the headache of putting together something new when he’s never seen the outfit before?
Exactly! lol
I think my issue is I wear 30% of my clothes 100% of the time. I blame it on seasonal issues. But then, I just wear those clothes out, downgrade them to casual clothes, and then bring new clothes in the mix.
So I read about this post on an email string b/w bloggers and I thought damn I need to catch up on my reader.
I totally know girls who run this way and I am completely astounded by it. I can literally name only 2 times I have ever done this. Once because I was meeting my bf’s family for the first time annnnnnd his ex would be there, eep-needed to feel special and the second was for a job interview. The end!
I happen to work in a place that I can pretty much wear what I would want to wear and honestly I see no purpose in buying new things for a night out or even changing for a night out. I’m too old for these types of things I think. My wardrobe really does take me from work to out and to the blog-I feel life should be kinda easy that way 😉
That’s the best way to have your wardrobe rather than countless spending on new outfits that are only worn a few times.
